Mike Patton and the Ictus Ensemble Pay Tribute to Luciano Berio with Laborintus II on July 3

7 May

Mike Patton, joined by the Brussels-based Ictus Ensemble, pay tribute to pioneering composer Luciano Berio with the July 3 release of Laborintus II via Ipecac Recordings.

Berio, a groundbreaking Italian composer whose lengthy list of compositions revel in experimentation and intuitively fuse classical, jazz and electronic music, created Laborintus II in 1965 to mark the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. The composition is based on the “Laborintus” poem by Edoardo Sanguineti. Laborintus II highlights the timelessness of love and mourning and is told in three voices. In 1972, Berio performed Laborintus II at the Holland Festival, the Dutch premiere of the piece, with a set that included a giant blow-up doll and old car tires.

In 2010, Mike Patton joined the Ictus Ensemble and Nederlands Kemerkoor at the Holland Festival for a performance of Laborintus II, which is featured on this release. Lieven Bertels, Holland Festival’s former Artistic Director, said of the recital, “Loyal to the historical context of a repertoire piece from the previous century, we were also aware that this project could attract a much younger audience, for whom Laborintus II would be a first-time discovery of Berio’s work. In reintroducing this piece, we added new touches — foremost being the refreshing combination of narrator Mike Patton, regarded as one of the world’s most versatile and astounding vocalists, with the fine vocal filigree of the Nederlands Kamerkoor and the musical volcano that is the Ictus Ensemble.”

Patton, who has continually paid tribute to Italian composers, most recently with his 2011 Mondo Cane album, discussed the differences and similarities between Berio, Morricone and Nono in an interview with Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, ” I can listen to Berio and Nono as easily as I can to Morricone but like all modern music of Italy, it is unfortunately marginalized. Maybe because of the language barrier, maybe because it’s not easily understood. Berio, who was teaching in California when he wrote this piece, was listening to jazz, pop and folk music and incorporated all of it in his works without prejudice.”

Ritual Productions are preparing to release a double whammy of Ramesses collectibles on wax

4 May

Ritual Productions are preparing to release a double whammy of Ramessescollectibles on wax. This news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that they will be supporting EyeHateGod in August. The acclaimed album, Take the Cursewill be released on 180 gram black vinyl, gatefold packaging and will include an A2 full colour poster and 12inch shaped sticker insert. The release will also include a bonus 7inch with 2 live tracks from Roadburn 2011. Bonus tracks are ‘Take the Curse’ and ‘Terrasaw’.This will be followed closely by the extra special vinyl version of Possessed By The Rise Of Magik which features remixes by Justin Broadrick (Godflesh/Jesu/Greymachine/Final/JK Flesh). This is what he had to say about his involvement in this project…

It was with great pleasure that I mixed the Ram album, they’re my favourite dooooom band; not afraid to take chances, and not afraid to let the dope do the talking…psychedelic warlords.

His remixes enhance the audio with his uniquely dark and affecting musical perspective whilst maintaining the true essence of the original recordings. The way remixes should be. All in all, supremely magik. Do we really need to say both Ritual Productions and Ramesses are extremely pleased with the result? Possessed… will also be released as a deluxe gatefold and there are 800 copies of 180 gram black vinyl and 200 copies of 180 gram clear red vinyl.

Both records will be unleashed on vinyl in June.

The first 75 orders for each record through Ritual website will also receive: one Ritual Productions/RamSS black tote bag plus one set of three foil vinyl stickers. What are you waiting for?
Finally, here is a reminder of the tour dates in August and details of their appearance at Incubate:
7 August – The Fleece, Bristol with EyeHateGod and Dopefight
8 August – Academy 3, Manchester with EyeHateGod and Dopefight
9 August – The Garage, London with EyeHateGod and Dopefight

SUPERSONIC FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 10TH BIRTHDAY

1 May

Initial line up announced as early-bird tickets go on sale

For one weekend each year Digbeth’s arches vibrate with strange, wonderful sounds as the Custard Factory becomes the focal point for one of the UK’s most distinctive and respected music festivals…Supersonic Festival.

2012 marks the ten year anniversary of this dynamic, constantly challenging, experimental, multi-disciplinary arts festival, which identifies the otherwise indescribable connections between experimental music, art, performance and film. To commemorate this impressive and very special milestone this year, Capsule propose to work with Supersonic alumni and emerging artists to celebrate the achievements of the festival thus far whilst also focusing firmly on the contemporary. Because as well as giving a warm welcome to many influential, era-defining artists over the years, Supersonic always has an uncanny knack for highlighting new acts before everyone else is talking about them.

As ever, Capsule’s programme has a sense of spectacle at the very heart of it, always aiming to capture the imagination of the audience, and with a friendly, bustling atmosphere to boot, there is little wonder why the festival draws fans, artists and industry folks from across the globe.

As part of the initial announcement, Supersonic proudly present our first wave of artists confirmed for the festival and these include; Tim Hecker, JK Flesh, Dylan Carlson, Dope Body, Six Organs Of Admittance, Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, Flower/Corsano Duo, Carlton Melton, Goat, Lichens, Zeni Geva, Rangda and the Small But Hard showcase (see more detailed information about each below)…with many more exciting additions to be announced over the coming months. Watch this space for some very special announcements also…

Supersonic is a place to be educated and surprised: new, experimental and intellectually nourishing.” – WIRE

Having been a journalist for 15 years I’ve had cause to work at approaching 100 festivals all over the world and in my opinion Supersonic has the consistently best quality line-ups and is the most engaging and stimulating to fans of underground music. Certainly no other festival introduces me to more new and exciting music than this one. – THE QUIETUS

Capsule’s Supersonic festival has evolved…to consistently provide one of UK’s most anticipated Festival line-ups. Fans of dubstep, krautrock, free-jazz and doom metal were all catered for on a bill which promised to both rupture the ears while stimulating the mind through its diverse selection of music, film and specialist talks.” – CLASH

Here is the expanded information about each artist (in alphabetical order)

Bohren & Der Club of Gore

If you enjoy it slow and low, Germany’s Bohren & Der Club Of Gore will very likely do the trick. In fact, with each subsequent release the German quartet’s music grows increasingly refined. Playing together since 1988, that band hint at doom, jazz, drone and contemporary classical with an unparalleled restrain. Live shows are few and far between. We are honoured to host them at Supersonic Festival 2012.

Carlton Melton

If you prefer old SST label cassette tapes or an early Spaceman 3 cassette you recently found wedged in the back seat of your car to super slick modern day music production, you may dig Carlton Melton. Their music is recorded live inside a geodesic dome, and is entirely improvised.

Dope Body

Primal hardcore thrash vibes from the lovely brothers of Baltimore. Dope Body are road doggies, funsters, and gleeful pummellers of basement and attic parties alike, wide-eyed fanatics of the craft that the more reasonable among us might mistake for insanity (it isn’t entirely so). Dope Body is a spasm of styles and directions, showering sparks from a half-melted thickness. They writhe under their own influences and experiments, swinging and swaying from guttural chugging to charming riffs n licks within the confines of a single tune. Promoting their brand new album, Natural History, Dope Body are in possession of what might be their most COMMERCIALLY ACCESSIBLE album ever – especially if your idea of “commercially accessible” is Half- Machine Lips Moves/Psychic, Powerless…/or “Salad Days”-era punk. They have well and truly honed their own off-kilter sound, replete with heavy walls of rhythm, raw electronics and vocals that grunt and yelp with an animalistic ferocity. Lock up your daughters, your boyfriends, your kids – keep your own body in check – no one body’s the same, but everybody’s body is sure to get weird when it comes into contact with Dope Body!

Dylan Carlson

Legendary Earth guitarist Dylan Carlson recently set out to pursue a solo endeavour, up to now he has released a cassette as drcarlsonalbion but there still remains an air of mystery and much anticipation as to what direction this solo musical endeavour will go next. For Supersonic, he will be teaming up with a number of other musicians including Teresa Colamonaco on vocals, Michael York on bagpipes, and Rogier Small on snare drum.

Flower/Corsano

As a powerful and loud guitar/drum duo, Lightning Bolt comparisons come cheap….the Flower-Corsano Duo are something else – more like a white-punk-jazz-trash Konono No.1 or an Eastern sound, opiate-fixated Harry Pussy. As a duo they have that special power to elevate through noise, rhythm and primal harmonix. An exhilarating sight/sound that shudders the body and cleanses the mind. Obsessive stuff.

Goat

A collective who hail from a small and very remote village in deepest, darkest Sweden, Goat produce heavy, afro psych punk, with absorbing percussion. Old tales of voodoo and curses from their village Korpolombolo inspires their music. One to watch!

http://goatsweden.blogspot.co.uk/

JK Flesh

Godflesh, Head of David, Napalm Death, Techno Animal, Jesu, Greymachine, Palesketcher – just some of the projects from the insanely prolific Justin Broadrick, who in his new relationship with 3by3, raises his Techno Animal moniker JK Flesh from the dead for it’s debut full-length outing, to once again prove his mastery of all things brutal.
Soul-crushingly dark beats and bass, layered with Broadrick’s inimitable guitar and vocal fuzz, providing a stark contrast to 2010’s Palesketcher output, that will resonate with fans of Godflesh and the post-dubstep landscape alike.

Lichens

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is an artist and multi instrumentalist working with voice in the realm of spontaneous music Through collaboration Robert has worked with such artists as Lucky Dragons, Alan Licht, Lee Ranaldo, White/Light, Kevin Martin, Tyondai Braxton and Genesis P-Orridge.

Rangda

Rangda, the child-eating demon queen of Balinese mythology, finds a sonic voice via the epic, thrashing jammerisms of Sir Richard Bishop, Ben Chasny, and Chris Corsano. A twin virtuoso guitar attack is matched by one of the most in demand drummers in the world. Live, they are utterly thrilling, and a rare opportunity to witness such important players in avant garde contemporary music playing together.

Sir Richard Bishop

Richard Bishop is an improviser, composer, and an intrepid explorer on electric and acoustic guitar whose work often reflects the shadow worlds of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and other points along the Gypsy trail. There is also a fair amount of experimentation involved in much of his string-work which can lead to audio realms rarely visited by others. Attentive listeners may hear shades of Jimmy Page, Django Reinhardt, Sonny Sharrock, and Ali Akbar Khan in his playing. Others may hear the sounds of a train wreck or a swarm of bees flying into a buzz saw (it depends on the day). It hardly matters. Bishop has fused all of these and many other elements to forge a unique and inventive style all his own.

Six Organs Of Admittance

Six Organs of Admittance is the primary musical project of guitarist Ben Chasny, ” the architect of one of America’s best-ever psychedelic syndicates” – Pitchfork. http://www.sixorgans.com/

Small But Hard showcase

Promoting exciting new label Small But Hard with exciting artists, including…

Koyxeи is one of the many aliases of Kouhei Matsunaga, when in his Hip Hop/Breakbeat guise with vocalists & MCs.

C_C – after listening to a lot of jungle, dub and breakcore, Eduardo Ribuyo had his brains blown when he met NHK, aka Kouhei Matsunaga. The ensuing metamorphosis brought us C_C, master of handmade beats and analogue feedback loops. Taking k7 tapes as his primary material, and sourcing sounds from anything and everything, C_C produces heavily textured music breathing, repetitious, and deep. Live performances envelop, soupy and treacly, moving incognito through his signature improvised flow.

Devilman comprises of three strong individual talents, Shige (DJ Scotch Egg) on bass, Gorgonn (Dokkebi Q) live mixing, and Taigen Kawabe (Bo Ningen) providing vocals. They are part of a secret underground organisation fronted by the mysterious MR. D.

DJ Scotch Bonnet is the new solo project of Shigeru Ishihara, aka DJ Scotch Egg. A maverick, crazed with energy and excess creativity, Ishihara’s chance meeting with Matsunaga Kouhei spurred an isotopic explosion of activity and inspiration; the result was new dope style distorted bass and beats

Kakawaka makes noise. The lunatic who took over the asylum, Kawakawa merrily blends childish tomfoolery with mind mangling noise. Abrasive sound sculptures beat you into submission until you are sick on the carpet. He spits in your eye and pisses on your face. For thus it is written in the great journal of musical endeavour that someone somewhere will achieve maximum joy from this unholy racket.

Tim Hecker

Canadian based composer and sound artist, Tim Hecker has spent the last decade inhabiting a unique intersection between noise, dissonance, and melody. In his varied and celebrated works, digital and organic sources tightly intertwine. The immense power and menace of his live shows make Hecker a contemporary master of volume and texture.

Zeni Geva

Japanese noise rock group led by singer and guitarist KK. Null. Zeni Geva’s music can be diverse and experimental, incorporating elements ranging from death metal and hardcore punk to math rock, psychedelic, and noise rock. Their music is often technically unorthodox and demanding,

Dope Body release album track “Weird Mirror” – FREE DOWNLOAD

27 Apr

Having recently announced the unholy union of Dope Body and Drag City we thought it was about time we unleash a taster from the album for all to hear, so here it is, available for free download, “Weird Mirror” – showcasing Dope Body’s punk-rock ferocity at its finest.

Don’t forget you can also check out album track “Lazy Slave” on Soundcloud.

Still not heard Natural History by Dope Body? Read on to find out why you should check it out…
Dope Body, the lovely brothers of Baltimore, have erected a fresh slab of sound fit for release 4 June 2012. They call it, Natural History. This is the Drag City debut for these fellows, sure to give hope to all bodies world-wide, both natural and enhanced.

Dope Body formed in December-of-2008-Baltimore as an experiment in musical instincts, jamming and writing the simplest one-part/one-riff/one-minute songs that were the first thing to come to mind (most ended up on their first tape 20 Pound Brick). They then set up a novelty basement show in this super-small basement, with the great intention of trying to stoke primal hardcore thrash vibes in both the music and audience, which at that point in time was kind of lacking in Baltimore (mostly dance-party-Wham-City-absurdist-style). It was a great mess of an experience with drunken beer flying, shirts tearing, glass breaking, strings snapping, amps frying, cigarette smoke asphyxiating… so much fun that a silent acknowledgement was made: don’t stop doing this, something feels too right about it. Dope Body strove to play that kind of show over and over again since then, somehow maintaining a work ethic, being fairly prolific without the threat of taking themselves too seriously.

Natural History is Dope Body in possession of what might be their most COMMERCIALLY ACCESSIBLE album ever – especially if your idea of “commercially accessible” is Half-Machine Lips Moves/Psychic, Powerless…/or “Salad Days”-era punk. They have well and truly honed their own off-kilter sound, replete with heavy walls of rhythm, raw electronics and vocals that grunt and yelp with an animalistic ferocity.

Dope Body are bloodthirsty and ready to take the UK and EU by storm with both Natural History and promised live appearances – lock up your daughters, your boyfriends, your kids – keep your own body in check – no one body’s the same, but everybody’s body is sure to get weird when it comes into contact with Dope Body!

Rare Noise Records presents Metallic Taste of Blood

26 Apr

Metallic Taste Of Blood is an instrumental album brought about by the collective nous of Eraldo Bernocchi (Winter Garden w. Budd and Guthrie, Obake with Pupilllo, Pandi and Fornasari) on guitars, pianist Jamie Saft (of New Zion Trio, Zorn’s electric Masada, Cuong Vu, Marc Ribot and others), bass-player Colin Edwin (of Porcupine Tree and Ex-Wise Heads) and drummer Balazs Pandi (of Venetian Snares, Bong Ra, Obake, Merzbow and Otto Von Schirach).

Manifestly undefinable, Metallic Taste Of Blood collects very diverse strands and genres of music (from metal, dub, avant-jazz and progressive rock primarily) and fuses them into instrumental compositions that tightly straddle what on paper appear total opposites (thus truly representing RareNoiseRecords’ ethos). Both brutal and delicate, distorted but clear, boiling and cool, sweet and brackish, as per the band’s own name.

Yet perfect balance is reached, when distorted guitars sound clean and soothing, while cascades of piano notes suddenly morph into threatening shards – listening to this will lift you into a state not unlike that of cognitive dissonance, one of deep, uncomfortable enjoyment.

An ever surprising recording, laying the foundation to entire new genres.

Musicians from Isis and Deftones form new band – Palms

26 Apr

Meet Palms, a newly formed Los Angeles based quartet featuring three former members of ISIS (Aaron Harris, Clifford Meyer and Jeff Caxide) with Deftones’ vocalist Chino Moreno.

“Clifford, Jeff and I started Palms a little over a year ago out of a desire to continue making music together after ISIS ended,” explained Harris. “Chino joined shortly after and our sound took shape from there. We’ve worked really hard on this first release and are excited for people to hear it. It’s nice to be back behind the drum kit, and with this line up.”

“Being a huge ISIS fan I’ve always dug the moods these dudes convey with their sound,” added Moreno. “I am excited to combine my sense of creativity with theirs, and to have fun doing so.”

Palms’ debut album will be issued by ISIS’ former label, Ipecac Recordings, and is slated for a 2012 release with a release date to be announced soon. The album was recorded and mixed by Harris, and produced by Palms.

Palms is Jeff Caxide (bass/keyboards), Aaron Harris (drums), Clifford Meyer (guitar/keyboards) and Chino Moreno (vocals).

Felix release video accompaniment to album track ‘Blessing’

24 Apr
Andrew Telling has directed a stunning short video for Felix. It is very well matched to the haunting chamber pop on album track ‘Blessing’ (with gorgeous overlapping vocals and stripped down piano). I strongly recommend.
This video serves as a welcome reminder that their brand new album Oh Holy Molar is due out on Kranky. Check it out!
