LINE UP EMBELLISHMENTS AND ROUND UP OF NEW ADDITIONS…
There is no holding Capsule back as they’ve added even more exciting live acts to the festival line up, keeping it bursting at the seams with a diverse range of new music. Australian sound artist Lucas Abela (the brains behind the Vinyl Rally will be at the festival performing as Justice Yeldham.. Abela creates an other-worldy sound by pressing his face and lips against glass whist employing various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries. Trust us, it has to be seen to be believed, so for a taster check out this video from his Supersonic 2008 appearance. Rhythm, drone and psychedelic noise will come in the form of praised Manchester collective Gnod. Finally, Free School will bring the sunny Balearic sounds of summer and the icy kosmische sounds of winter for some disconcerting dance music.
We are over the moon to announce that for the Six Organs Of Admittance Supersonic Festival performance on Sunday 21 October, Ben Chasny will be joined on stage by his former Comets On Fire band mates, Ben Flashman and Utrillo Kushner. This means we can expect to hear songs from the widely acclaimed new album Ascent.
Niko of Oxbow also informed the Capsule team that he will be joining Merzbow on stage as part of a collaboration, unique to this festival. Though we can only begin to imagine what this will entail, we are thrilled that this year’s performers are pulling out the stops to make this tenth anniversary year, as memorable as ever before.
In the Supersonic Festival marketplace, as well as being home to many record stalls, we can today reveal that Savage Pencil will be doing a Q+A and signing for the brand new book Trip or Squeek. The book will be published by Strange Attractor, Mark Pilkington has this to say about it: “The book is presented in landscape format, Andy Capp style, with a single strip – and where relevant, accompanying notes – on each spread. It will have a hand-drawn foreword by New York artist Gary Panter. This is very exciting for me – I still whip out my DVDs of Pee Wee’s Playhouse, on which Gary was set designer…On a personal level, Edwin’s art and writing have been a continuous part of my cultural life since the late 1980s, when I was reading Sounds and buying Shock Records 7″s featuring his cover art, and his Angel Dust biker music compilation on Blast First.”.
An additional panel has been added on the festival’s opening day, Friday 19 October in association with New Music Plus – making the case for cross artform collaboration. Supersonic Festival have joined forces with New Music Plus to put together a panel featuring: Jo Beggs, Head of Development for the Manchester Partnership Museums, Will Dutta, Chimera Productions, Andrew Ellis of Samizdat and coordinator of Rhys Chatham 100 guitars at Liverpool Biennial and finally Lisa Meyer, Co-director of Capsule/Supersonic Festival and chaired by Julia Payne. As the people behind some of the most exciting music-led inter-disciplinary work in the country, our panellists will talk about why this work is important to them, and about how they make it work – artistically and financially.
