29 Mar

Today, humanity will feel Wolfbrigade‘s wrath once again, as another track from the Swedish crust icons’ forthcoming LP Damned infects the world wide web. Courtesy of the diehards at Blow The Scene — who instinctively conducted a massive interview with the band back in January when the pack’s cooperation with Southern Lord was announced — now behold the opening track from Damned.

As loud as your system will allow, stream “Feed The Flames” RIGHT HERE.

The LP’s closing track, “Peace Of Mind,” is also still streaming at the Southern Lord website.

The first of three Wolfbrigade albums to be released via Southern Lord, Damned is set for Europe on April 23rd. The 35-minute album was recorded at renowned Gothenburg-based Studio Fredman by Frederik Nordstrom (At The Gates, Amon Amarth, Opeth) and shows the band at their finest and most devastating hour in their storied lineage.

Black Shape Of Nexus: German sludge outfit’s third LP oozes towards release

28 Mar

Hailing from the German city of Mannheim, sludge devastators BLACK SHAPE OF NEXUS, having recently signed with Exile On Mainstream, are preparing for the release of their upcoming third full-length Negative Black.

Recorded in the Winter of 2011 and twisted into shape at the mighty Tonmeisterei Studio, Negative Black — an album four years in the making — marks a new step for Black Shape Of Nexus, carving a path into their foreseeable future. The album has been eagerly awaited by BSON’s diehard cult fanbase and underground doom/sludge aficionados since the release of their bruising 2008-released Microbarome Meetings 2xLP. While the outfit already bears the reputation for unfurling some of the most destructive but still coherently-flowing sludge metal available, incorporating outside elements of crust, black metal and ambient/soundscape persuasion at times, Negative Black surges to even deeper caverns of auditory obliteration, pummeling you with painfully slow doom and finishing you off with acrid, harsh drones, and giving down-tempo a whole new meaning.

Black Shape of Nexus shall release Negative Black on 7 May.  It will be made available to fans on CD in a matte-varnished 6-panel digifile, a 2xLP format with inside/out printed gatefold cover, and deluxe digital download.

Negative Black Track Listing:
1. Illinois
2. 400H
3. 60 WV
4. 10000 µF

With a German tour confirmed for the month of April in support of Negative Black, many more live actions for the band will be announced sporadically over the coming months.

Italian riffmanglers Incoming Cerebral Overdrive are preparing to swarm the senses of forward-thinking extreme music fans the world over with their third LP, Le Stelle: A Voyage Adrift, this May via Supernatural Cat. Rarely Unable PR joins forces with Drag City to unleash Dope Body

27 Mar

Rarely Unable is over the moon having teamed up with Drag City for the first time to unleash Dope Body, the lovely brothers of Baltimore, who have erected a fresh slab of sound fit for release 4 June 2012. They call it, Natural History. This is the Drag City debut for these fellows, sure to give hope to all bodies world-wide, both natural and enhanced.

Dope Body formed in December 2008 Baltimore as an experiment in musical instincts, jamming and writing the simplest one-part/one-riff/one-minute songs that were the first thing to come to mind (most ended up on their first tape 20 Pound Brick). They then set up a novelty basement show in this super-small basement, with the great intention of trying to stoke primal hardcore thrash vibes in both the music and audience, which at that point in time was kind of lacking in Baltimore (mostly dance-party- Wham-City-absurdist-style). It was a great mess of an experience with drunken beer flying, shirts tearing, glass breaking, strings snapping, amps frying, cigarette smoke asphyxiating… so much fun that a silent acknowledgement was made: don’t stop doing this, something feels too right about it. Dope Body strove to play that kind of show over and over again since then, somehow maintaining a work ethic, being fairly prolific without the threat of taking themselves too seriously.

Dope Body are road doggies, funsters, and gleeful pummellers of basement and attic parties alike, wide-eyed fanatics of the craft that the more reasonable among us might mistake for insanity (it isn’t entirely so). Dope Body is a spasm of styles and directions, showering sparks from a half-melted thickness. They writhe under their own influences and experiments, swinging and swaying from guttural chugging to charming riffs n licks within the confines of a single tune.

Natural History is Dope Body in possession of what might be their most COMMERCIALLY ACCESSIBLE album ever – especially if your idea of “commercially accessible” is Half- Machine Lips Moves/Psychic, Powerless…/or “Salad Days”-era punk. They have well and truly honed their own off-kilter sound, replete with heavy walls of rhythm, raw electronics and vocals that grunt and yelp with an animalistic ferocity.

Dope Body are bloodthirsty and ready to take the UK and EU by storm with both Natural History and promised live appearances – lock up your daughters, your boyfriends, your kids – keep your own body in check – no one body’s the same, but everybody’s body is sure to get weird when it comes into contact with Dope Body!

Track Listing:
1. Shook
2. Road Dog
3. Beat
4. Twice the Life
5. Powder
6. Out of my Mind
7. High Way
8. Weird Mirror
9. Lazy Slave
10. Alpha Punk (Bonus)

Matana Roberts live at the Cockpit in London tonight!

26 Mar

Chicago born (now based in NYC), avant-guard, jazz saxophonist Matana Roberts will be playing live at The Cockpit in London tonight as part of their monthly Jazz night, a barrier-busting jazz/contemporary music binge with Jazz on 3 presenter Jez Nelson. Every last Monday…

Matana is working in various mediums of performance inquiry; has created alongside visionary experimentalists of this time period in various areas of improvisation, dance, poetry, visual art, theatre; as a saxophonist, documented on sound recordings as collaborator, side woman and leader. Some recent work focused on the place/problem of memory/tradition as recognized, deciphered, deconstructed, interrogated through radical modes of sound communication, alternative styles of musical notation, and multi genres of improvisation.

Her most recent album Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de Couleur Libres (Constellation) came out last year and impressed critics with her own unique approach to contemporary jazz, combining her skills with an affecting emotional narrative throughout the record.

Also on the bill will be Jason Yarde’s TRIO WAH!, and Shadow Writing.

Doors are at 6pm and tickets are just £7, what more could you ask for?

Launcing Louder Than War, the record label

25 Mar

The highly popular and influential new music website Louder Than War has been reviewing, discovering and generally doing a lot of shouting about great new up and coming bands since it started back in 2010, and now they’ve decided to start releasing some of the best emerging international talent they find themselves on their very own 7″ series.

John Robb, legendary music writer, musician (Membranes/Goldblade) come talent spotter is at the helm and he revealed the following manifesto about the label:

There’s so much great music out there that we cover on the Louder Than War website that we decided we just had to release some of it. With the website now established as one of the main music websites in the UK and full of new bands, releasing them seemed obvious. So we have.

We will be eclectic, there are no boundaries to taste and we operate purely on instinct. If it feels good we release it.

We are international. Already lined up is Argentinian dark electronic music, UK garage indie, Dutch post punk, punk rock, indie rock, Indian black metal and Brighton pop noise.

The releases will come in a uniform brown card bag and look great. We believe in style. A single is a thing of beauty from the music to the presentation.

The singles will be released as seven inch vinyl because that’s the ultimate pop artefact- the perfect pop statement and they will have downloadable mp3s because we live in the 21st century and like to carry around 100 000 songs in our pockets and that would be tricky if it was all vinyl.

We believe in the power of rock n roll. We are proof that music is more alive than ever, the doom mongers can monger and we will get on with the music.
We are truly independent.

This is just the start. In 2013 there will be a big Louder Than War festival for these bands and bigger names. We are fighting the notion that celebrity culture and talent shows are all we have. We will win.
…and with that, here are the winners…
First out of the gate on the label will be Surge Of Youth by Deadbeat Echoes, rising stars from the North of England. Based in Cheshire, the band (who are all about seventeen) seem to have an endless stockpile of great songs, arriving with punk band nous, yet are thrillingly versed in rock n roll and understand all the fascinating nooks and crannies and are not trapped into a genre. They are more than just lad rock – they are taking the arid and wonderful and translating it back into a language that the mass audience will understand. It’s a great trick and another hallmark of great NW music – the trick of making high art for the people, taking the esoteric and putting it onto the terraces and into the council estates. As the ones with everything right now; from the tunes to the attitude to the innate genius and the work ethic, they’re pegged to be massive.
Deadbeat Echoes are further proof that the North West is still capable of creating fab twisted guitar bands. They combine rabble- rousing lad pop with sharp and angular riffs and that natural psychedelic twist that the greatest NW bands have – that trick of making reality sound strange and twisting the mundane into genius.- John Robb

A SIDE: Surge Of Youth

B SIDE: Forces

Followed closely by Raised On Replicas, two boys and two girls from Brighton who present their debut single OMG.

“They deal a discordant pop/noise that is full of the joys of hypnotic loud guitars, driving bass and really fab metronomic, motornik drums that are entwined with sharp melodies and hip, witty cutting lyrics. Somehow they manage to surf the possibilities of noise and tunefulness all at once and soundtrack the bedsit bohemian twilight zone of early 21st century UK. With their innate charm and their wired melodies they are pop, a real pop of the everyday cranked through a fuzzbox and brimming with the joy of guitars and intelligence.

They are in love with the likes likes of Pavement, Pixies, Blur, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sonic Youth and whilst they have some of that American scuzz to their sound there is something very British about them. Raised On Replicas sound like the real noise in 2012 and, potentially, with their witty lyrics and nervy, wired delivery will soundtrack the late night, Xerox machine, bedsit bohemian, pleasure zone. They look great as well, a mix of Oxfam chic and ballroom glam and are steeped in music culture and their band name, like their music, is really hip, funny and cool” – John Robb

A SIDE: OMG

B SIDE: Sometimes

Stay tuned for more singles incoming from the label soon including a special record store day release.

Acephalix: San Fran deathsquad release new track from second album due in May

25 Mar

San Francisco’s malevolent death metal overlords ACEPHALIX are preparing to set their second official full-length loose via Southern Lord this May, delivering with it some of the most uncompromising, old-school death metal brutality of the year.

While their first few releases bore a more metal-edged crustpunk sound, the Acephalix attack has undeniably shown more death metal influence with each passing release. After the cult crust/metal scene success of their Aporia LP, released via Prank Records in 2010, the band dropped two brutal demos — 2010’s Interminable Night and 2011’s Flesh Torn In Twilight, Southern Lord brought the two demos together and released a one-time CD pressing of 2000 copies which sold out rapidly. Over the past two years Acephalix have toured relentlessly, doing the Western US with Danish death metal horde Undergang and also taking part in the Power of the Riff 2011 Summer tour alongside Black Breath, Winter, Noothgrush, Eyehategod, Pentagram and more.

Now officially a part of the Southern Lord roster and a major priority for the label, Acephalix are preparing to assault the planet with their second official full-length, bringing out their most pulverizing, low-end death-crushing riffage and cavernous vocal malevolence yet with Deathless Master. With an incredibly evil, thundering delivery, the eight hymns harnessed on Deathless Master were recorded with Vöetsek’s Jef Leppard, who also recorded Interminable Night. While their punk/crust heritage is still detectable in their songwriting, but the primal delivery of the riffs and guttural, horrifying tone of the vocals on Deathless Master sees the band make the final transition from into a full-fledged, disgustingly behemoth death metal unit.

The fiends at Cvlt Nation have once again proven their loyalty to Acephalix‘s brutal tones by hosting one of the most rapture-ready tracks from Deathless Master. Behold your face, after you pick it up, once “On Wings…” rips it off for you.

Deathless Master will be released early in May on CD in the UK and EU and sometime in June on vinyl. Expect massive touring from Acephalix beginning in the months just ahead and all through the year.

Deathless Master tracklisting:
1. Bastard Self
2. Deathless Master
3. Tomb Of Our Fathers
4. On Wings…
5. Raw Life
6. Blood Of Desire
7. In Arms Of Nothing
8. The Hunger

Hanson Brothers solve European Sudden Debt Crisis!

25 Mar

Lovingly pinched from the Southern Records blog…

Back in the nascent year of 2010, Tommy Hanson was otherwise occupied on a lecture circuit tour that began in Spuzzum, BC, and didn’t end until Penistone, UK. His foray into academia led Hanson Brothers mastermind to arrange a tour as “Johnny Hanson Presents Johnny Hanson’s Tribute to the Hanson Brothers featuring Johnny Hanson & Special guests The Hanson Brothers as the Hanson Brothers”.

Tommy took a break from his speaking engagements to help pack houses in the Big Bend Tour of 2010, featuring rowdy gigs in Corpus Christi, Brownsville and El Paso. The experience in nostaglia and tribute inspired Johnny Hanson to unearth a lost Hanson Brothers’ classic, Sudden Death.

Though the master tapes were long rumored to have been buried in a time capsule in Frogmore, Ontario, it turns out Robbie Hanson had been using them as shin guards. Under the watchful eye of General Manager Paul Forgues and the spiritual guidance of Tiger Williams, Johnny remixed the entire album while homebrewing a special IPA known only as “Studio Saucery”. It was a very hilarious play on the word “sorcery”, as the atmosphere in the studio was downright magical!

Always one to give 110%, Johnny has recovered a few golden notes, several sweet harmonies, and a whole lot of ones, twos, threes and even some fours.

Reavailable again via Southern Records (based in Penistone, UK), Sudden Death will surely bring back memories of old time hockey when overtime meant glory, not shootouts.

Be sure to catch the real Hanson Brothers on their Spring 2012 Sudden Debt tour through Europe!
